The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21st March. Preston REDC, Preston City Council and UCLAN jointly supported a local campaign under the Preston STAR initiative.
Racism and Racial Discrimination continues to affect people all over the World.
Let us celebrate success and pledge to work towards the elimination of racism in all forms of discrimination.

Organisations from Preston will host Standing Together
Against Racism (STAR) Community Day event to show their commitment to community
cohesion and tackling racism.
The annual event will mark the United Nations
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This event is
free to attend and is in its seventh year. The event is organised by Preston & Western
Lancashire Racial Equality & Diversity Council, Preston City Council,
Lancashire County Council, University of Central Lancashire and UCLan's
Creative Communities Group and Sahara in Preston. The event is also supported by a wide range of
community groups and individuals.The event will be held on Saturday 21 March on Preston
Flag Market from 11am to 3pm to mark the international day. A range of community groups and organisations
will come together to celebrate the city's cultural life with live music and
performances. This year the event has
been extended to include the University of Central Lancashire’s 2nd
Diversity Carnival which will include a number of Samba Drummer Bands
performing a carnival style event with a parade on the Flag Market. This event is part of the University of
Central Lancashire’s Diversity and Inclusion Festival.It will be opened by the Mayor of Preston, Councillor David
Borrow, and will be hosted by Councillor Nweeda Khan, Preston City Council
Cabinet Member for Communities and Social Justice. There will also be speeches
during the event.

YOU'RE INVITED TO THE 5TH ANNUAL PRESTON STAR EVENTS - Preston STAR events have been organised by the Preston & Western Lancashire REDC together with its key partners; Preston City Council, Lancashire County Council, UCLAN, Creative Communities Group and Preston Black and Ethnic Minority Forum. These events are to celebrate and raise awareness for the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and this year the Commonwealth. These events are to celebrate Preston's unique characteristics of the City's long tradition of tolerance and respect for all its citizens, and visitors! Both the FREE events are listed in Lord Shuttleworth's Lancashire Commonwealth Celebrations 2018.

Preston Standing Together Against Racism - School Choir Event - 53 Degrees, Fylde Road, Preston. Schools from across Preston invite you to join with them to show your commitment to community cohesion and tackling racism in the City. Doors open at 6.30pm for 7.00pm start for an evening of song and dance from guests the Abhi Dance Academy and the Choir from the Seventh Day Adventist Church. There will be speeches from Guest Speakers, who include; Lord-Lietenant of Lancashire, The Rt Hon the Lord Shuttleworth KG, KCVO, County Councillor Susie Charles - LCC Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Schools, Councillor Matthew Brown - PCC Cabinet Member for social justice, inclusion & policy and Mrs Veronica Afrin, Chair of PWLREDC and Young People from Preston. Other Guests include The High Sheriff of Lancashire, Mr Robert Webb JP, DL

Preston Standing Together Against Racism - Community Day - FREE event - Preston Flag Market - Saturday 19 March 2016 - ALL WELCOME!
A wide range of community groups and organisations from the Preston area have joined Preston & Western Lancashire Racial Equality and Diversity Council to organise a community day which will take place on the Flag Market from 11am - 3pm on March 19th 2016. The event will be officially opened by the Mayor of Preston at 1pm.
This event is a FREE event to all Citizens of Preston and others visiting Preston City. The event is also part of the celebration and public awareness for the 'International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination' which will be on 21st March 2016.
There will be stalls providing information and advice together with entertainment throughout the day including crowd participation in Bollywood style dancing and African drumming and salsa dancing provided by Salsa Northwest. Performers include local artists Bingo Bay and Crossbill.
The Fusion Awards will take place in the Concert Hall, King George’s Hall in Blackburn on Saturday May 30 2015.

To raise awareness about the insidious effects of racism and highlight the positive influence of diversity of cultures and communities, Preston is organising ‘Preston Standing Together Against Racism'. This event is FREE and will be held over three days Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd March 2014 and will include a varied programme of activities involving young people and community groups from Preston. PLEASE NOTE: As from 01 April 2012 we will no longer be able to provide the Legal Casework Service, as our current funders, Equality and Human Rights Commission will not be funding this project. Therefore this service ended on 31 March 2012.
We will try and gain future funding from other sources.
Equality Advisory Support Service
The Equality Advisory Support Service (EASS) is an advice service aimed at individuals who need expert information, advice and support on discrimination and human rights issues and the applicable law, particularly when this is more than advice agencies and other local organisations can provide.
The EASS was commissioned by Government in 2012 to replace the EHRC Helpline, which is now closed. The EHRC is no longer able to respond to individual enquiries as the EASS has taken over this role. Information about the decision to close the Helpline is available on the Government Equalities Office website.
The service is run by Sitel working with Disability Rights UK and other partners. The EASS works collaboratively with other advice organisations from whom it receives referrals, and with the EHRC. It does this by referring on potential test cases and sharing information to inform the EHRC's wider work on equality and human rights. Information is only passed on with the consent and knowledge of the individual concerned.
The EASS can:
- Give bespoke advice to individuals across the whole of Great Britain on discrimination issues
- Explain legal rights and remedies within discrimination legislation, across the three nations
- Explain options for informal resolution and help people to pursue them
- Refer people who cannot or do not wish to go down this road to conciliation or mediation services
- Help people who need or want to seek a legal solution by helping to establish eligibility for legal aid and, if they are not eligible, to find an accessible legal service or to prepare and lodge a claim themselves
But it cannot:
- Provide legal advice
- Provide representation in any legal proceedings
- Provide advice on court or tribunal procedures once a claim has been issued
- Advise on the strength of a case or the evidence needed to prove a case
- Provide advice to employers
- Provide advice to solicitors and other professional advisors
